It is a pastime of volunteering for the success of a community, a traditional value fading in the current climate that was recognised at the weekend.
George Rathbone has over 30 years of committee service with the Wakool Recreation Reserve and service to the Wakool community, and at 93 years young, is a life member of the Wakool Polo Cross Club and the Wakool Show Society. His horsemanship led to his representing Australia and Wakool in tent pegging. On his horse and in World War I replica kit, George Rathbone has been an iconic feature at the yearly Anzac Day parade in Barham.
A ceremony held Saturday evening unveiled a plaque to recognise George’s service to the Wakool Recreation Reserve. His service to the rice industry was also noted.
The passion for community is clearly noticed in every conversation. George’s volunteering principles and community values have been handed down through the generations.
