We have been hearing a lot about submarines recently because of Australia’s decision to buy nuclear powered submarines and eventually manufacture them under the terms of the AUKUS deal. Australia has owned and used various submarines for military service for many decades now. Some of the earlier submarines were of the Oberon class and I am reminded of this regularly because a de-commissioned 90-metre-long Oberon is on display at the town of Holbrook, just off the Hume Freeway north of Albury. We are regular users of the Hume Freeway and have seen this submarine a number of times. Thinking about submarines, I am reminded of a story as told by Rick Bundschuh.
