Nurse of the Year Accolades for Melissa
1 min read

‘Shocked’ and ‘overwhelmed’ is how Melissa Robinson describes being awarded the Nurse of the Year for Victoria and the ACT recently.

‘The Ochre Way Annual Excellence Awards’ for 2020 recognises the excellence of Ochre Health staff who demonstrate dedication to ‘The Ochre Way’ – the purpose, vision and values of Ochre Health.

Melissa, unaware of the nomination, was presented with the award by Ochre Health Medical Centre Cohuna practice manager, Leanne Dickinson, surrounded by her peers at a surprise announcement. “I am very happy because it’s a nomination that’s from my peers, so someone within the team has nominated me, and the awards committee has liked the nomination. It was nice to have them all there,” said Melissa.

Long-time Cohuna residents will remember Melissa as a hairdresser. While she loved the work, she was ready for a change and at 33, expressed a desire to undertake an aged care course. She recalls being met with laughter from her mother who said, “You’re not very good with bodily fluids.” Melissa’s response was, “I’ve got children, surely I am!”

Nonetheless, and encouraged by her mother, she gained her aged care qualification and worked at the (retirement) Village for five years.

Melissa continued her studies and qualified as an enrolled nurse. When the opportunity arose to work at the Cohuna based clinic as a practice nurse, Melissa, who says she is not a real risk taker, was hesitant but applied and looked forward to the challenge.

“I enjoy my job thoroughly. I’ve got a good group around me. It’s good when you’re well supported in the workplace and love what you do.

“It’s easy to go to work, isn’t it?”
