Cleaning up Australia

The roadside along the Cohuna-Koondrook Road is looking much cleaner after Sunday morning’s Clean Up Australia event.

St Mary’s students also participated in the clean up, picking up rubbish at the recreation reserve, Gilrule Park, Apex Park, Garden Park and the school yard on Friday.

Clean Up Australia has become an annual event with over 18.3 million people cleaning up Australia since the event began 30 years ago.

Members of Cohuna Freemasons took part in Clean Up Australia, spending several hours picking up and sorting rubbish found alongside the road.

Cohuna Freemasons cleaned both sides of the road along a 1.1km section of the Cohuna-Koondrook Road, from the Koondrook turn off. They filled two 7x4 trailers but were forced to call it quits when they no longer had anywhere to put rubbish.

Following the pick-up, they spent several hours sorting the rubbish, putting what they could into recycling bins and taking the rest to the tip. Alcoholic beverage bottles and cans were the most common item collected.

The Freemasons plan to participate in Clean Up Australia annually and welcome community members to join in.
