Lions Shine on Australia Day

Locals gathered Sunday morning as the BBQs fired up for a traditional Aussie breakfast on the banks of the mighty Murray River at Barham’s Riverside Park. In perfect weather from 8 am, attendees could enjoy a complimentary breakfast of cereal and fruit or a cooked meal featuring tomatoes, baked beans, bacon, eggs, and avocado on toast. The Australian flag was raised against a magnificent blue sky. The gathering was invited to recite the affirmation led by Murray River Shire Councillor and Deputy Mayor Neil Gorey: “As an Australian citizen, I affirm my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I uphold and obey.” A recording of Advance Australia Fair echoed through the gum trees, supported by the crowd. Gannawarra Shire Councillor and Deputy Mayor Ross Stanton addressed the attendees, and the Barham Koondrook Lions Club expressed gratitude to everyone for coming, inviting them back next year at the same time and place. Victorian Liberal Leader Brad Battin was scheduled to be the guest speaker, but a leadership battle after Christmas led him to emerge as the new leader of the Victorian Liberals. Who has also reorganised the Victorian Liberal frontbench and now has other duties as leader. The event wrapped up with the Seekers’ song; I Am Australian.
